Winter Fine and Decorative Art Auction a Big Success!

Well, there is no other way to say it, our Decorative Art Sale on Saturday was one of the best sales this Department has seen in about a year! The combination of a great group of antiques and the fact that most of the Tri-State was snow/iced in for the past two weeks resulted in a "standing room only" salesroom. About 230 of our 250 chairs were filled for most of the day!
There were some great suprises during the sale as well. The sale began with a BANG with a wonderful little Samuel Henry Alken (attribution) painting selling well above the $2,000-4,000 estimate, going for $5,875.

A Groom with Two Horses

A magnificent Robert Scott Duncanson oil, Robbing the Eagle's Nest arrived on the auction block for the first time and was sought after with heavy phone and floor bidding. The painting sold to a floor bidder, exceeding its $30,000-50,000 estimate and selling for $105,750.00!

Perhaps not blowing us away with the selling price, but a nice suprise none-the-less was the sale of a Ohio Stoneware Jar with Rare Occupational Portrait. This great late 19th century, bail handled vessel with sponged decoration and freehand cobalt portrait, identificatied a Mr. Charles Hammack Lancaster on its surface. The lot was purchased on the floor by the great great grandaughter of the same Charles Hammack Lancaster, returning the piece to the family.

With our first sale of the year put to rest, the Decorative Art department is already gearing up for the June sale. Production on the catalogue begins in March and we have already started cataloging the items we have in house.

The American and European Painting sale is all set to run for March 12th. The catalogue is at the printer and the sale is to be set-up in the next few weeks.

Onward and upward!
